A Day in the Life of Sarah Black

Sarah Black, Heron IT’s director of sales and marketing, has more than 25 years’ experience of working in the computer industry. Here she describes what she does in a typical working day for the company, which provides high-quality IT procurement and support services in Suffolk, Essex and across East Anglia and the UK.

“There really is no such thing as a typical working day, because the work I do is so varied. I might be in the office sorting out something for a client, ranging from getting some new toner for them to ordering 14 new laptops.

“Or I might be visiting a client in somewhere like Leeds, so sometimes it will involve staying over. In many cases I don’t have much time to stop for lunch – I might just have a sandwich – because I am so busy.

“My working day isn’t just a 9 to 5 affair either. For example, the other evening, I went to s Suffolk Chamber of Commerce event at Willis Faber to do some networking and spoke to one lady and followed it up with a call the next day because she was interested in ordering some IT equipment.

“I used to work for Greengage Computer Products, and Colin was one of my clients. Colin, Dan, Nick and I all work very closely together and we always have a weekly meeting where we discuss what we are currently involved in and quite often I will go with one of them to visit clients together, particularly if it is a major project.

“We all have our niche specialities and we all work really well together. I’d also like to think that I am a very good researcher, as I always research lots of different IT products before I make any recommendations to the customer.

“We all have the same attitude to our clients – we all want to go the extra mile for them. We won’t just come up with a quote or sell someone some equipment and then say goodbye. We pride ourselves on giving customers a top-quality personal service, so we are always keeping in touch with our clients, making them aware of the latest computer upgrades and making sure that all their IT equipment is working correctly,

“One advantage of Heron is that we are not tied to the major brands. This means we don’t have to suggest a particular product or IT solution, as it’s always about what is best for the customer.

“However, we do enjoy excellent relationships with major names like Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft, so we can be sure that we can get our customers the best deals. I still get a real buzz from knowing that I can help my clients achieve the best possible IT solutions and for the right price.’
